Day 40 February 9th 2016

Work day and the beginning of the week even though it’s Tuesday because of the “Monday – isation”  of Waitangi Day. Don’t you just love four day weeks!? Walked into Ham East for lunch with Fiona and Bill at  the Grey Garden.  A unique little place with an eclectic collection of all sorts of every day stuff from the past that evokes memories of childhood and adolescence.  Simple food and excellent coffee.

Day 39 February 8th 2016

Out at Raglan again today to show another visitor around.  Last week we watched as people jumped off Te Kopua bridge.  It was a sad day today out there; a teenager drowned when someone landed on top of him after he had jumped off the bridge.  Two hours later the appetite for bridge jumping was still as strong as ever but I didn’t really feel like taking any photos, out of respect.  We headed over to Ngaranui beach where the tide was as far out as I think we have ever seen it.  I love the reflection of the clouds in the shallow water.

Day 38 February 7th 2016

Had a hard day out on the trails today with ‘international post’.  Good varied terrain on the Karamu Walkway which is part of the Te Araroa track, perfect training for the oxfam trailwalk.  Hot, hot,  hot and lots of hills! Oh,  and stunning views too of the Waikato. 100km 8 weeks today!  We’re aiming to raise at least  $3500 for Oxfam so please donate for a great cause at oxfam trailwalk

Day 36 February 5th 2016

Friday evening.  Time for a beer.  The Tron has seen a resurgence of craft beer bars over the last couple of years. Just in time for our re-entry into the adult world now that both boys are over 16. The Craft Bar in Hamilton has become our de facto local.  15 different beers, excellent food as well as great hosts and within walking distance from home – What more does one need!?

Day 34 February 3rd 2016

Today needed a special effort to honour a special lady.  My good friend Liz lost her battle with cancer on this day three years ago.  Kate,  her daughter is staying with us at the moment,  and since I was heading over to Edgecumbe to work with a school today, I thought it would be a good opportunity to climb   Mauao,  more colloquially known as ‘The Mount’  or Mount Manganui.  Its 232m height is gained in just short of 2km of winding track so in the hot sunshine it is no mean feat and a fitting tribute to a wonderful Mum and friend.
Here we are at the summit.

And a cheating extra – a view from the top.

Day 33 February 2nd 2016

Would have been my Dad’s 84th birthday today and he was a great man for his bikes,  both self – propelling and motor!  So this photo of Nigel cycling to work seems appropriate.  He too was a cycling man –  all about Edinburgh and touring around Scotland with laden panniers.  Car parking fees at the University for staff and students introduced  this week may see an upsurge of bike use in the eastern part of the Tron!

Day 32 February 1st 2016

We love having visitors because it means we get out and do stuff we might not otherwise bother to do. Today we went to Rainbow Springs in Rotorua mainly to see kiwi but had fun seeing other birds and reptiles too.  Oh, yes… and the Big Splash!  “A nine minute journey through time”.  They could learn a lot from Disney in terms of presentation; it is a little short on information and detail but the plunge pool at the end caused us great hilarity!  Worth another nine minutes of my life to repeat it!  This photo is just before we plunge into the abyss!
