learning

An emotional day. The rollercoaster ride of life as a parent seems to never stop. Lachlan has done a whole heap of growing up this week as he has coped with the tragic death of a close friend.  It has touched all of us since we all knew Mitchell; he was a relatively permanent fixture in our house for a couple of years.  The hardest thing as a parent is the sense of powerlessness – what do you say to a 21yr old who has just lost a friend?  Hold him, be there, let him cry,  wait until he is ready to talk. Then do it all again.  I think what struck me today, and what made me proud, was how close this large group of friends were.  Watching them as they carried their friend on his final journey, laughed at their memories, told their stories – irreverent and touching – of a friend who brought so much to their lives, and then held each as they cried together, I could only think that they were strong together and will continue to support each other. Probably even more ferociously than before. Very young, they have learned how precious friendship is and how fleeting life can be.

14A day of learning in Te Reo. It was good to be able to devote a whole day to immersing myself in developing my understanding… I didn’t quite get to the point of clarity from confusion!  A little cheat here because this photo was taken yesterday in the Gallipoli exhibition. Did order really come out of the confusion? Have we learned to accept difference, build relationships and celebrate each other’s qualities?   It’s hard to be believe given today’s political landscape.

Day 180 June 28th 2016

It was a grey day today. A day spent at the computer working, and no inclination to head outside really into the greyness!

I am trying to learn Te Reo and today I had a chance to catch up a bit and as I was practising  and working out ways to remember vocabulary, I found these images.

Kei te pēhea koe? How are you feeling?

Kei te whakahīhī ahau. I am feeling proud.

Proud that I am having a go and learning – slowly, but learning!

Day 154 June 2nd 2016

I am trying to learn some Te Reo right now and this week I have had the opportunity to practise my mihi for real.  It is pretty scary speaking in front of people but it’s is so culturally important to make a connection and let people know where I come from.  Today a couple of the teachers from a Maori medium school spoke to us and said how pleased they were that we had introduced ourselves in Te Reo and how well we spoke. Then one of them even added a comment to the evaluation form.  Very proud of myself.
