Amongst the busy-ness of work I managed to grab a coffee at Demi-Urgos – definitely the best coffee in Hamilton. Maintaining work-life balance by slotting in a 12km run with Jo from Little Waipa to the swing bridge and back. Very happy (but knackered!) to have run all the way and completed in 1hr25! The water flow after the last two days of rain is impressive. Unfortunately, my photo of the wee waterfall is pretty poor so you’re getting coffee instead!

And the rain keeps falling! The temperature fell yesterday though it’s warm with the wet today. I took advantage of a break in the rain to go to get some bread. The sweet chestnuts are falling and bursting. Autumn is on its way.

Tail end of Cyclone Debbie is dumping its rain on New Zealand. Wet! Another French film this evening – perfect weather for going to the cinema. A social commentary whose message was bleak but which managed to leave you with a sense of hope for humanity. ‘Standing Tall‘ or ‘La Tête Haute’ tells the story of a young boy growing up and surviving against the odds with the help of a judge with compassion and a social worker who recognises himself in the boy. A few tears were shed!

French film festival time again at the Lido. I saw Ma Loute last night which was a bit weird. Incest and cannabalism, bourgeoisie and proletariat! This evening’s film “Juste la fin du monde” was more quintessentially French. Slow moving, small cast, moody close ups, family squabbles, intense.

Busy day. Hockey trials for Gus at 8.00am for U18 Waikato team. Trailrun up Maungatautari with Jo – 900m of ascent over 15km in 2h25 – not bad going a week after a 100km! Bit of a ‘nana nap’ this afternoon when I fell asleep while reading! Then watched Gus playing hockey for Suburbs – did us proud by crossing the ball in for a goal, then scoring one and then being named MVP. Finally went to see a very weird but interesting French film…far too complicated to explain so here’s a link to the Guardian review of Ma Loute.

Another year. Another birthday. It was lovely to spend time with my boys today. Coffee with Nigel and Gus this morning (Lachlan was working) and dinner as a whole family this evening. The only full family photo was a not very good selfie so today’s photo of the day is me and my big son because I don’t see him half as much as I want to now!
